Harbour Way Gives Jobs Boost and Training Opportunities
When work stared on Harbour Way in 2010. Neath Port Talbot council and the contractors Costain pledged to enlist the help of local businesses and the local workforce to build the road.
They have been working closely with the Council’s Workwaysteam, who help people get back into work if they are unemployed or economically inactive within Neath Port Talbot. In the first year alone, 24 jobs were created and filled with people local to the County Borough.
Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Ali Thomas, says “The Council is committed to creating job opportunities for local people. Workways is an excellent way to help people gain the skills needed in today’s job market. Thanks to professional mentors, it also builds confidence in those who have been out of work for some time.
“The Council is pleased to be working with Costain to deliver this promise.”
Costain has also been working with local supply companies, such as Afan Landscapes and JES Port Talbot Ltd. to make sure as much material as possible is sources locally or even recycled within the scheme.
John Skentelbery, the Project Manager for Costain says “With such a big project being undertaken in the town, it is vital that local talent is sourced and used. Not only will it give the town’s economy a much needed boost, but it also encourages people t take ownership of the landmark.”
Costain has teamed up with the Council’s Business Services team, to offer training opportunities to people working within the engineering and construction industry. The first course that has been undertaken was the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme. This course helps first time line managers fully understand the importance of health and safety, welfare and environment and gives sound help and advice on how to safely manage a construction site.
Paul Mason, Customer and Production Support Engineer for ALC was among the first group of people to take part. He said “The course was very good and it was refreshing to hear a lecturer teaching their vocation. We took this course to gain and secure a specific contract which, thanks to the course, we were successful in,”
