Safety First

9 December 2010

Site safety will be high on the agenda as work progresses on Harbour Way.

Safety BriefingThe Council’s contractor Costain has implemented strict and detailed procedures for all site operators. Workers must wear mandatory personal protection equipment (PPE) and attend a site safety induction.

In addition, all work is risk assessed and a method statement is drawn up to ensure a safe method of working with specific permits required for more high-risk elements of work.

With regard to public safety, the entire site will be fenced off with the main entrances clearly defined. A 24 hour security presence will be maintained at the main site compound and the message to all members of the public and in particular children, is not to enter the construction areas.

Traffic Management

A major objective of the project team led by Neath Port Talbot Council is to minimise any adverse effects on traffic during the construction period.

A traffic management plan will ensure the safety of the public and the workforce in and around the construction areas, and that any disruptions to traffic movement is kept to a minimum. We will also ensure that traffic management information is communicated to the public and businesses in the area.
